Quick Review: ZuluZuluuu – What’s the Price?

I’m not sure how to classify this release… experimental hip-hop? chillwave afrobeat? neofunkadelica? Sorry for the last one, it’s kinda bad. But one thing is for sure though, it’s a damn good album. It’s dense, spacey, chill and nicely layered. Zuluzuluu aren’t afraid to experiment with more unusual synths and vocal effects, which flow nicely above the chill beats. I heard all sorts of disparate influences, probably based off my own preferences and limited funk knowledge (I only have stevie wonder’s innervisions to compare). The one band I would compare it to directly is Helado Negro, who i’ve been fortunate enough to see during the Liquid Music series. I could totally see these guys do some sort of collaboration as well. Maybe it’s in the works for the 2018 season? Who knows… The other influences reminded me of Prince, FKA Twigs, Depeche Mode and even elements of the Police.

Anyway, I really like this album. Highly suggest checking it out.

RIYL: Helado Negro, FKA Twigs.
